Please can someone advise...as I want to eventually breed out spurs on large females..I have a few females which are nice type but have spurs....should i not breed from these at all...or breed from them (as they are nice big birds) and then only keep offspring that dont have spurs???..please advise..many thanks...

i think it would be easier to get rid of the spurs at a later date than to find good sized birds of equal merit so i would breed from these but if possible use a cockerel who doesn't have big spurs in his second year and eventually only breed from hens with little or no spur development

thanks for your replies...i was thinking along the same grounds really as using a small spurred cockerel and eventually breeding out as it is a shame not to breed from nice type hens....with re: from a message i received asking the question 'does it say they are not to have spurs when showing'...to be honest I cant think I have come across spurs in literature on standard breeding of leghorns but i assumed it was a trait that was not desirable in hens and also I think Ian Mills posted a comment in the Leghorn Yearbook (last year).stating to breed it out from showing hens....the funny thing is..is that it is quite prevalent in my blacks but all my exchequer hens dont have spurs...anyway..thanks again for replies...
