I am currently writing a book on chicken genetics and I am determining the genotypes of the different varieties of chickens. I was working on the leghorn breed and could not find any pictures of columbian leghorn chicks. I need to know the down color of the chicks in order to determine part of the birds genetic makeup.
Is the down color of a columbian leghorn all whitish like a light sussex or is the down color similar to a columbian wyandotte. Columbian wyandottes have a dorsal (back) gray color and a ventral (belly) white color.
Any help would be appreciated. And pictures of a some chicks would be great.

That sounds great. From what you have told me it sounds as if they are wheaten at the E locus.
Wheaten birds that are columbian restricted do not have the gray back. Birds that are columbian restricted and brown at the E locus have some gray on their backs.

Hi Tim, I know that Curtis Oakes in Cochranton ,Pa. USA,has bred Columbian Leghorns for a number of years and would also be a good one to ask.I think he is listed in the judge section of Poultry Press. Dan H.

Yes you should have 50% Silver blues in the f1 first generation cross. Blue crossed with Columbian would result in 50% Blue Columbian.
