If you have a Black tailed Red Leghorn bantam male, yes try crossing him to Black Tailed Buff Leghorns (bantams ?).If these Black tailed Buff females have good type,so much the better. I would pick your darkest Black tailed Buffs ,most deepest red/buff with dark or black markings in hackle and tail/tail coverts. The f1 chicks will be darker than their mothers and lighter than the red father.Pick your reddest with black markings, female f1 and mate back to the pure red male again. You should have decent ones in both sexes in f2 and be well on your way with black tailed Red Leghorn bantams.

Thanks Dan ! I all my buffs are bantams .i have 3 Gold / dark buff pullets with blk on the tail and hackle. i will sort a pen up after november. What would i do with the cockerels as you wrote '' use the darkest pullets back on the father '' should i keep the darkest/best for showing or should i kill all the cockerels ?

You are welcome. I would not use the first generation cockerels as they will be too light in red,and by using them will only weaken the red color more.By the 2nd generation going back to pure red male the red color may be strong enough to make use of the darkest red f2 cockerels.
The only possible use for the f1 cockerels (outside of soup or pets)may be to pick the very lightest one and use him for new blood for the pure black tailed buffs. It will take a generation or two to blend out into an even shade. Because of the scarce and rareness of good Buffs,Reds, and Black tailed Reds in the UK,I would advise to make the most of the good quality ones in these colors. It takes time to blend these crosses and backcrosses, but they are related colors and eventually can be worked into, helping each to survive and even thrive with vigor and productivity.
